Amritha's Story

Namaste.. Greetings! My name is Amritha (aka Mili), I live in Colorado though am originally from India.  I just wanted to share my personal story of weight loss and improved health that I hope will be inspirational enough, and hopefully will help some others who are also struggling similarly like me in their life.  I work full time in the IT profession for a living. I was born underweight but then I started gaining weight as a chubby toddler at about age 4 and on.  I grew up as an overweight child and teenager. As my family and I are originally from India, it was a challenge to fit in with the crowd in several ways being of a different origin with an accent in my English and being overweight. My parents took me to several Dr’s to see if there could be some sort of medical disorder which can be treated.  I was put on several types of hormonal and anti-depression drugs but of no use. I always lived with my family since they were my only constancy in my life, as we moved around quite often, which also made the whole ‘fitting in’ even more difficult. I grew up to be an obese adult reaching near-death health conditions. I tried multiple diets (starvation diets), strenuous exercising, but nothing worked, I would still continue to gain and/or stay at my unhealthy weight. Finally, after being diagnosed with a heart condition (Cardiomyopathy) during the birth of my daughter in Dec 2007, per my Dr’s strong recommendation, I ended up having weight loss surgery in Feb 2011.  Within a year of the surgery, I had lost ALL my excess weight just by dieting alone.  Then I added Zumba as exercise to tone my body and that helped me get into better shape, as well as get rid of ALL my health conditions and significantly improve my heart numbers.  Prior to my weight loss, I was on medication for Diabetes, High Cholesterol, High BP and my heart condition Cardiomyopathy.  I was a walking time bomb ready to die at any moment. I am currently completely free of all illnesses, and am on very low dose medications to maintain my heart condition.  I started out at 280 pounds at my max and am now at 130 pounds. Currently, my diet consists of mainly high proteins and low carbs and I continue with my Zumba workouts.     Though this weight loss has been a positive journey for me overall, I am still working on building my self-confidence.  Having been ridiculed and misjudged all my life for not being ‘normal’ physically, limiting me to even do day to day things like fitting into normal clothes and actively playing with my 5 year old daughter.. I am now learning to slowly accept myself for me.  It is an amazing experience now to be able to go on job interviews and get the job I want on the very same day because of the confidence that my face and voice illuminate now when meeting people, it has truly been life-changing dramatically.  My goal now is to encourage and motivate others like me who maybe the shy, quiet, hesitant type by nature, who never was blessed with a perfect figure (even after working hard for it), and/or maybe having some of the health conditions I had, to really show that you don’t have to be perfect to achieve your goals and dreams in life, that if I can do it, so can they! I know I will never have the celebrity figure, but I am content to be the best that I can be and that’s all we can all hope for in life, right? And I always reach out to people as a ‘Real’ person they connect with in their daily life, someone who relates to them, and have walked in their shoes in life.  I am 34 years old (born on July 16, 1978) and I am grateful to see each morning with everything that I went through in life. Please let me know if you would like any additional information from me and I will be happy to provide! (Before and After pics, etc).. Thank you so much for listening to my story. Hope to have generated some interest :) Warmest regards, Amritha (aka Mili)
