Path to Parity Get Involved
Equity can be a matter of life and death.
Inequity behind the scenes can kill your career. In health, it can end your life.
That’s because women are more prone than men to some risk factors that cause heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and dementia. And women, particularly African-Americans, are more likely to die within five years of a heart attack. Research is our lifeline to understanding why.
Health equity is a story that needs to be told. Use your voice to tell it. Here’s how you can get involved with the American Heart Association and become a real force for change in your own community and across the nation.
Empowered to Serve
EmPOWERED To Serve is a movement inspired by American Heart/American Stroke Association multicultural volunteers around the country who are passionate about driving change through health justice in their communities. These committed ambassadors are impacting gaps in health equity through advocacy, policy, education and social change. Become an ambassador for your community today!
Urban Health Accelerators
The EmPOWERED To Serve Urban Health AcceleratorTM is a six to eight week intensive training and grant opportunity designed to challenge you to apply innovative, community-based solutions to help solve an urgent urban health problem.
Is there a problem in your community that has an attainable, sustainable solution for it? Once you’ve determined the problem you feel most passionate about solving, it’s time to roll up your sleeves. If you, or someone you know is working on the solution, apply online for the EmPOWERED to Serve Urban Health Accelerator. Applications are open through June 30th. Apply today!
You’re the Cure
Never underestimate the power of a woman. And when women come together for a common cause, nothing can stand in our way. If ever there’s a time to shout a little louder and demand change, it’s now. And the leaders on Capitol Hill need to hear your voice. We advocate every day for smarter, stronger public health policies that address issues of access to care, federal health programs and eliminating health disparities so that more women not only receive better care but have a real chance to experience health equity.
Would you lend us your voice? If so, visit You’re the Cure to find pressing policy issues just waiting for your powerful voice. Because together, women are a force to be reckoned with.
Science and Research
Women, unfortunately, are underrepresented in heart disease research, but you can help by participating in clinical trials. Clinical trials are scientific studies that determine if a possible new medical advance can help people and whether it has harmful side effects. There are all types of clinical trials, and you don’t have to be sick in order to participate in certain trials. To learn more about clinical trials and where to find trials happening near you, visit our clinical trials Guide page. Learn more today!
Do you want to help make a difference in real women’s lives, including your own? Be a part of an ambitious study to end heart disease. It only takes a few minutes to make a big difference. Anyone can join — whether you have heart disease or not.
It’s easy, it’s safe and it really makes a difference. Join today!

STEM Goes Red
Women are grossly underrepresented in STEM fields across the board. Go Red For Women is working to change that through STEM Goes Red by cultivating tomorrow’s female STEM innovators, today. STEM Goes Red provides young women opportunities to come together and experience the wonderful world of STEM, meet career mentors, network, and learn from established female executives who are paving the way for women in STEM. To find out if there’s a STEM Goes Red event near you, please contact Claire Kinzy at Claire.Kinzy@heart.org.
