Jessica' Story

Hello. My name is Jessica and I am 23 years old. I received a heart transplant just this past June ( 4 months ago) which saved my life. I have been dealing with heart issues since I was a mere 18 months old. I had cancer as a child and the chemo they gave me made my heart weak to a point that when I was only 20 years old I went into severe heart failure for the first time. After being on medicine( for 2 years) and the help of a pacemaker my husband and I were given the Ok to try and start our family. I got pregnant in May of 2009 and delivered a perfect baby boy on (my birthday) January 4th 2010. Just 2 short weeks after delivery I slipped back into severe heart failure which required me to have emergency surgery to get a LVAD ( left ventricular assisted device ) pump placed in my heart to help me live while I waited on the transplant list. I was on the list for 4 months before I received my new heart. I had my transplant on June 29th 2010. My life has completely changed since the transplant. I am able to be a wife and mother. I can play with my son and see him grow.. I am so very thankful for the staff at St Thomas Heart in Nashville Tennessee. They truly saved my life. I love being a woman of Go Red and I hope I can participate in events to spread the word of heart disease to other women.
