2019 Foodscape Innovation Award Recipient

The WICShopper App Food Use Improvement Project, aiming to boost use of a federal nutrition assistance program, was submitted by Kellogg Company and claimed top honors in the American Heart Association’s first-ever Foodscape Innovation Awards.

Applicants were scored by a panel of judges with expertise in nutrition, food science, environmental sciences, retail, food manufacturing and public health. The panel selected the recipient of the Innovation Excellence award, and the public voted to select the Consumer Choice awardee among four judge-selected finalists. The WICShopper App Food Use Improvement Project claimed the top spot in both categories.

The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program provides low-income women, infants and children up to age 5 with free, healthy foods, nutrition education and health care referrals. Although WIC serves about half of all infants born in the United States, many of the food benefits go unused, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Kellogg collaborated with the app’s developer, JPMA, Inc., to add new recipe content and features to help participants monitor their account balances, scan products to ensure eligibility, find stores and more.
